What is a tipping bucket rain gauge?
Tipping bucket rain gauge is one of the most traditional meteorological instruments in automatic weather stations. These rain gauges include a rainwater collection funnel, two carefully calibrated “barrels” mounted on a fulcrum, and an electronic switch. Rainwater is directed through a funnel to one of the small barrels, or catchment areas. These buckets usually contain only a few hundred square centimeters of water. Once it is filled, it becomes overbalanced and tilts downward, emptying itself into the gauge housing when the other bucket is lifted into position for the next reading.
Each time a bucket tips and switches position, a small switch send an electronic signal. The number of times this signal is sent, coupled with knowledge of the carefully defined catchment area of each bucket, provides a reliable calculation of rainfall. Note: Because the rain gauge relies on a balanced fulcrum, it is imperative tipping bucket rain gauge is installed on a level surface. The surface should be sturdy and free from vibration.
